Eating Disorders - What you need to know about diets

This episode we talk to Doctor Cristina Castagnini who fully recovered from an eating disorder and now gives personal and professional perspectives about struggles with food, weight, and body image. She has 25 years of clinical experience as a licensed psychologist and certified eating disorder specialist.

This is a mental health issue that doesn’t get talked about enough. You hear about women and men, especially teens, who suffer in silence. Some do not get any treatment at all, until its too late.

Not eating or binge eating are serous conditions. They could well lead to organ damage or death.

Social media targets our children with messages that they are not good enough. Society also pressures people, especially teenagers, to fit into a certain body type. This could lead to the development of an eating disorder.

We agree that most people who diet gain back the weight and they yoyo back and forth. However, I think in general, people should eat healthy . I believe, especially certain people, like over fifty-five and people with depression are much better off eating healthy food and maintaining a healthy body fat.

We both agree that dieting is too popular in this country and this attitude may lead people to be too restrictive with food that may be considered unhealthy. Not getting enough food can be as damaging as being on a strict crash diet were we may not get the nutrients we need.

I think yoyo dieting may be considered worse for you than if you didn’t diet at all. Again, we didn’t quite agree on dieting. By no means does this show want to tell people whether to diet. That, I think, comes down to a person-to-person basis. The show offers more input to make a good decision in your life.

But we all agree that this is a huge problem, and I am glad to get another perspective. Please enjoy.

I am a 64-year-old male with ADHD, OCD, severe depression, severe  anxiety, and dyslexia. I struggled for 40 years working in the high-pressured Information technology field. Even though it was good money, I didn't have much luck in the financial department.
In 1991, at the age of 33, was when the severe anxiety attack occurred, and the support system was not there to handle it. So, I checked myself in to a mental hospital in Piscataway, NJ. That started my long road to recovery. After the attack, I was severely depressed and anxious for 6 months. This experience is detailed in episode four "Beating Severe Anxiety/Depression".
